Kollage med skatetjejen

Yesterday, a huge man wearing camouflage told me politely – and oddly enough, with a distinct Spanish accent – that I am unfortunately too old. Too old to join the armed forces that is. I actually passed military eligibility a few years ago at 41 and 11 months. The soldier that laid the news on me was sitting in a recruitment office between a beauty salon and one of many surf shops here in salty Pacific Beach.

At 44, I don’t really feel old. And with Elle, there isn’t much time for even thinking about my age.

Anyway, after being denied the opportunity to serve my country, Elle and I rented a couple of skateboards (cruisers) and rode down the promenade for a few hours. Elle looked so cool riding the pavement with the breaking waves along side her.

In about a week, Elle will celebrate her seventh birthday. As one of what will likely be tons of presents, Charlotte and I have hired a teacher to give her a lesson on how to ride the waves. Hope she enjoys it. Of course, I’ll be in the water next to her the whole time. Watching my little girl master the art of surfing is something I don’t want to miss.
