I have no idea where she learned it, but Elle has recently begun making it very clear to her parents that she is only a child. And because of her young age, she believes that she should be excused of almost anything she does or says. I call it throwing in the “kid card”.

Most recently, Elle was using a luggage cart at Los Angeles International Airport as an oversized skateboard.

Yes, both Charlotte and I have repeatedly let her know, on several trips, that this is not acceptable behaviour because someone can get hurt – including herself.

Anyway, after telling our now seven year old daughter eight or nine times how we felt about her zig-zagging in the departure hall – losing more and more patients each time – Elle looked up at me and said, “Dad, you know what, I’m only a child and there’s really no reason to get upset”.

The first couple of times when she threw in the “kid card”, I was impressed and almost rendered speechless. Its a great argument. But still no excuse. Especially now that Elle is seven and starting to learn about responsibility, empathy and cause and effect. A life long learning process – if you ask me.
