B & H

The Oyster Bar & Nobu

I am completely full, tired and happy. I’ve just come back to the apartment after eating yet another incredible meal here in New York. Well, actually, I spent the better part of Monday afternoon eating and drinking. But not just ordinary food at ordinary places. We’re talking world class culinary experiences here folks. The kind of stuff you read about or see in the movies. Or, throw yourself at here in New York City.

After sitting out the rain for a few hours, Håkan and I grabbed a cab to the humongous Grand Central so we could enjoy a plate of fresh oysters at the famous Oyster Bar in the basement. We ate four different types of those slimy suckers (the bar serves 18 kinds) accompanied by a glass each of Champagne. After the third oyster something happened. It was like this weird breakthrough on my palette. All of a sudden, the wine, the spicy sauce and the oysters started working together to create an amazing culinary sensation. Some might call it an oral orgasm.

Next to us along the bar sat an elderly gentleman in a suit and hat eating what may have been his daily dosage of shellfish. He seemed equally pleased with what he was eating. Behind the Oyster Bar is a yet another bar and we moved in there to enjoy a local beer. This room was completely windowless and yet packed from wall to wall with patrons. Great atmosphere here as well. Thanks for the tip Ulrika!

At about 6:00 pm our hunger set in again – so we scrambled to get a cab in the rain and headed about ten blocks north to 57th Street where part owner Robert de Niro and his friends restaurant Nobu is. The dining room fills up quickly, so we opted for the bar and sat down to what turned out to be one of the best dinners I have ever enjoyed.

This is a bar where a gorgeous interior meets superb food and where friendly and professional staff guide you and make sure your filling your mouth and taste buds with only the best stuff available. It ain’t cheap, but definitely something to write home about.

So enthused were we, that without even looking in the menu, we let Orin, the tall bar maestro, compose a symphony of smells and tastes we will not forget anytime soon. Each plate was so beautifully presented that I almost regret not taking photos of them all.

Among our eight courses were: yellow tail sashimi with thinly sliced jalapeño peppers in lime flavored olive oil, rock lobster salad with a delicate rice wine vinaigrette, Russian caviar on top of cilantro doused poached raw tuna, more sashimi and a few maki rolls filled with among other things, soft shell crab.

Needless to say, we also enjoyed a few Japanese beers throughout our dinner and a finished our first Nobu dinner off with a fruity Martiniesque cocktail. Incredible. Helene, now I know what you mean! Nobu has eateries in a few select countries and on their site you can see where.

And here’s a pretty decent guide to New York.
