The other evening, Charlotte and I were invited to the grand opening of the new restaurant Monster Steakhouse, here in Västra Hamnen. To begin with, we don’t exactly have an abundance of restaurants to choose from here – so, a real American style steakhouse with great desserts (above) is more than welcome. And if what we tried during the grand opening is representative of what they’re going to serve at Monsters, they should do just fine. Then again, the trick isn’t just to offer great food in this area (several other places have done this and still failed epically). Equally important is to find an attractive balance between cost, convenience and consistency. If you ask me, not a lot of places here manage that over time. The dessert was shot with Panasonic LX7.

Malmö 10k

So, today thousands of folks (pro and casual runners) ran 10k around Malmö. Part of the route went through our neighborhood and after a few hours of selling off a ton of my camera gear and other stuff in the gallery, I grabbed my camera bag and shot a few photos and captured some video of the event.

Neigh

Not 100% sure about the phonetic spelling here, but in any case, I’ve now gone through a few of my Neigh-sayers and now a few of these wondrous animals are included in my horse portfolio. The majority were photographed while grazing on a coastal field in Vejbystrand – a seaside village in southern Sweden. Some are from an annual competetion here in Malmö, while a few are from a remarkable assigment I had a few years back on Iceland.

Among pro skaters, Stapelbäddsparken, or, just “Stapeln” is regarded a world-class skatepark. One of the best in the world, in fact. Unlike popular surf breaks, where locals tend to get really aggravated and even aggressive when visitors intrude on “their” waves, this park is fundamentally democratic. You’ll see all levels of skaters here. BMX riders, rollerbladers and just about anybody on unmotorized wheels are also welcome here. Pussycat

I recently saw an interview with American photographer Tray Radcliff where he mentioned that his image archive had roughly 70,000 unprocessed photos. That’s a heck of a lot of photos to sift through. I’m reasonably good at filtering my imports and trashing unusable photos – but I still have at least 5,000 or so that need some of my extra loving care. Like this cat that I got aquainted with at a sanctuary a few years ago. Prrr…

Sailors

Almost forgot about that yesterday, we had a ton of competing sailors on the bay with the Öresund Bridge as a majestic backdrop. I shot a few clips of video from the event and a whole bunch of stills. The videos will definitely be part of my documentary about the Western Harbor.

By the sea

After dinner (Chicken Parmesan) last night and about an hour before sunset, I went for a long photo walks along Ribersborg Beach. I shot some video and took a few stills across the water towards our apartment building (in the middle above). Considering that we live so close to where two oceans meet (the Baltic and North Seas), the sea has been unusually calm these last few days.

Summer Nights

I dig night photography. Done right, it’s an outstanding way to visualize ambiance after daylight. Night photography does have its fair share of creative and techical challenges. Which, of coursec makes it all the more interesting to pursue and excel at. Fortunately for me, this fellow was kind enough to stand still for the eight seconds I needed to record the scene a few nights ago. More nightshots can be enjoyed here.

Today, it’s National Day of Sweden – a fairly recently added public holiday and at least here in southern Skåne, the weather couldn’t be better. The sheep shot above is from Gröna Lammet/The Green Lamb – part of yesterday’s assignment to document livestock and farmers at three different animal farms.

Parkway

If you’ve never been to Malmö, let me tell you that this time of year, you’d have a tough time finding a city with so many well-kept parks. It’s really something to be proud of as a taxpayer. This parkway is one of my favorite places in Malmö and when our daughter Elle was younger, my wife and I would often take her to school via this tree-lined avenue. I used two coupled monopods to get a little elevation for the shot.

I’ve now delivered my Botswana safari story and look forward to seeing it published in the next few weeks. Of all the places in Africa that arrange decent safaris, there are but a few companies on the continent that do so while maintaining good governance of the wildlife and the environment they operate in and take social responsibility seriously. Magic Light

Yesterday evening, Charlotte and I biked into town to catch the recently released and by us much anticipated film, “Hangover 3″. We enjoyed it, but even more so the ride home through one of Malmö’s many parks, Slottsparken. For once, I didn’t have a camera with me. So, tonight, at roughly the same time, I biked down to the small castle on the edge of the park and took a few photos as the sun bathed the area in warm, absolutely beautiful hues.

Electric

Today’s event by Scaniaplatsen was electrically powered and themed around sustainable transportation and Eco-friendly charging station technology. There’s no doubt in my mind that when our daughter Elle is ready for her first personal vehicle, she’ll have more options to choose from in this area than we do today. Hopefully, she can afford a nice looking car like the Tesla that participated this afternoon.

Impala

Even more animals…The only impala I’d ever seen prior to the thousands I saw while in Botswana, was the occasional Chevy Impala Lowrider stemming from somewhere in East L.A. The abundant, gentler and considerably more agile African version was a shear pleasure to encounter during our dusk and dawn game drives. As fleeing as they often were, I still managed to get a few decent shots of these white tailed antelope.

Fowl

Speaking of fowl, here’s a couple of sinister looking vultures from February’s amazing safari around the wetlands in Okavango Delta, Botswana. These two were keeping a lookout as the rest of the clan feasted on a dead elephant. I’ve allocated some time this week to focus on the hundreds of final candidate photos for my upcoming travel story from Africa. Interestingly, I took a lot more bird photos than I remember. In fact, there’s so many, that I’m seriously considering putting together a dedicated portfolio with a collection of my best birds. Must be an ornithologist in me, somehow.

Farmland

From my shoot at Hyllehög Gård the other day. I’m pretty sure this is a hen, but in all honesty, I’m a little confused when it comes to visually differentiating between hens, chickens and roosters. It was an interesting challenge to get the fine, feathered fowls to pose for me. Eventually, some of them will end up on a wall in our local grocery store communicating how much better free-range birds taste compared with those born, raised and endungeoned in dark, dreary factories.
